Dates are sweet, convenient and easy to add to meals.
They also provide fiber, potassium and other nutrients, making them a useful alternative to sweets with little nutritional value. But dates do not prevent strokes, clear arteries or treat high blood pressure on their own.
Their most realistic role is as one fruit among the many foods in a heart-healthy eating pattern.
